Description:

Elanna Nolan is a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia.

Her research addresses the question of how to forge civic culture out of great diversity remains a vital and unresolved issue. Her PhD research will examine what it is like (for marginalized youth) to live in a world where intimations of incipient terrorism, whether considered or casual, have become the new channel for everyday racism and ethnic hysteria. In the field of critical terrorism and security studies, this question is rarely asked. Her research employs a participatory approach that will deepen understanding of the specific effects of security discourse and intervention on the everyday lives of young, targeted minorities.
