Ryan Scrivens is a PhD candidate in the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University. Both his research objectives and experiences go hand-in-hand with the goals of TSAS, having studied right wing extremism in Canada for the last three years and completing a Public Safety funded project, titled “Right Wing Extremism in Canada: An Environmental Scan” (Principal Investigator: Dr. Barbara Perry, University of Ontario Institute of Technology). He has gained valuable experience in this field, not only by reading and documenting the activities of the right wing extremist “movement,” but by interviewing former white supremacists and police officers as well.
More recently, Ryan has paired up with Dr. Richard Frank to analyze the online sentiment of white supremacists on the Stormfront Canada sub-forum, and Dr. Garth Davies has recently joined the project as well. Thus far, they have used the Terrorism and Extremism Network Extractor (TENE) and advanced statistical techniques to understand online discourse over time. The broader goal of the project and subsequent projects is to identify online activity that transpires into offline activity.
