We would like to congratulate Dr. Joanna Amirault on being awarded one of Simon Fraser University’s 2015 Dean of Graduate Studies Convocation Medals! Supervised by a TSAS affiliate (Dr. Martin Bouchard), Joanna defended her doctoral dissertation Criminalizing Terrorism: The Impact of Context and Cohort Effects on the Sentencing Outcomes of Terrorist Offenders in August 2014. Drawing from UK and Canadian sentencing data she collected from court documents and archives, Joanna investigates the factors associated with the sentencing of terrorist offenders, with a focus on major events (9/11, counter-terrorism legislations, etc) that may have influenced patterns in sentencing. One article examining sentencing patterns for FLQ members have been published in the International Journal of Law, Crime, and Justice. Another on the effect of the timing of major terrorist events such as the London 2005 attack on sentencing patterns in the UK was recently published in the European Journal of Criminology. Joanna was among the first cohort of graduate students who affiliated with TSAS, and participated in many of our events. Since September 2014, she has been a Criminal Justice Professor at Humber College in Toronto.
