The TSAS Summer Academy is a week-long program for graduate, post-doctoral students and junior policy makers in government, running July 21st – July 26th, 2013 at the Liu Institute for Global Issues, on the Vancouver Campus of the University of British Columbia.
Purpose of the Summer Academy
TSAS aims to cultivate a new generation of well-informed scholars and policy analysts. The Summer Academy is a principal part of this plan and brings together graduate students and policy analysts from across Canada to participate in a highly focused learning experience. The Summer Academy is designed to foster a comprehensive understanding of radicalization, terrorism, and security and how all of these intersect with the rapidly changing nature of Canadian society.

Eligibility
Applicants for the Academy should be either: graduate students who have at least one year of work already completed by the time the workshop begins, and who expect to write (or are already writing) a thesis that deals in some way with terrorism, radicalization, criminality, or security issues in Canada; or individuals who have recently taken up a position in government that addresses these issues. To demonstrate the relevance of the Summer Academy for their work, applicants are required to provide a 150-word statement explaining why they wish to register for the Academy.
The Program
The Summer academy comprises one week of intensive learning that is structured around 12 modules (2-3 per day). Participants will assemble on Sunday, July 21st , when the program will begin with an orientation, a field trip, and opportunity to socialize. the classroom portion of the Summer Academy will take place Monday, July 22nd to Friday, July 26th. Each module will include a presentation by an expert instructor of up to one hour, followed by discussion and an individual or group exercise.

– Government roles related to terrorism and security
Tuesday – Responding to the Threat
– CSIS: assessing the risk
– RCMP: investigating terrorism
– FINTRAC: where does the money come from?
Wednesday – Radicalization and its Prevention
– The radicalization process; social and psychological approaches to terrorism
– Social network analysis in the study of terrorism
Thursday – The Changing Social Context: The ‘New’ Canada
– Superdiversity and Canadian society
– The media and public attitudes about diversity
Friday – Toward a Safer Society
– Resilience: what is it and how is it achieved?
– Community outreach to prevent radicalization
– Case study: Oklahoma City, 1995 and after

This year, on a one-time basis, we have secured funds to offer a tuition bursary (worth $750.00) to the first 20 graduate students who register for the program.

Refund Policy: 
The withdrawal deadline is seven business days before the course start date. A $100 administration fee is deducted from each refund. No refunds are possible after the deadline.
