States around the world, including EU Member States and Canada, find it increasingly difficult to balance human rights obligations with security concerns, particularly in a context of economic uncertainty. This one-day event focuses on new trends in European migration policy, with particular attention to responses to population flows following the ‘Arab Spring,’ impacts of the economic and financial crisis, and ongoing instability in Syria and the Mediterranean region.

Guest speakers from Europe:
Petra Bendel, Centre for Area Studies, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany)
Sergio Carrera, Centre for European Policy Studies, Brussels (Belgium)
Michael Collyer, Sussex Centre for Migration Research (U.K.)
Shahamak Rezaei, Roskilde University (Denmark)

This policy workshop is organized by the Centre for European Studies (EU Centre of Excellence) at Carleton University (Ottawa).
